Frequently Asked Questions
Your Child's Dental Health
🦷 Why We Treat Baby Teeth
Why treat them if they fall out? Baby teeth are crucial for your child's daily development. They allow for comfortable chewing, clear speech development, and guide permanent adult teeth into their proper positions.
Does my child really need all this treatment? Yes. Cavities in baby teeth can grow rapidly. We tailor every treatment plan to your child's specific needs and how long that baby tooth is expected to stay in their mouth.
What happens if we wait? Small, painless cavities will expand. Delaying care leads to severe pain, infections, and more invasive, expensive procedures later. It is always better to do a simple fix now while your child is comfortable.
But my child isn’t in pain—does it still hurt? Not always. Cavities rarely hurt until they reach the nerve inside the tooth. Once in the nerve treatment is more expensive or the tooth may need to be pulled.
🍏 Causes & Financial Options
What causes these cavities? Natural mouth bacteria feed on sugars we eat and starches, producing acids that weaken enamel. Cavities are a combination of diet, frequent snacking, brushing habits, and natural tooth strength.
Is there a less expensive option? We will gladly work with your budget. We can prioritize the most critical teeth first and phase the treatments across multiple visits to help spread out the costs over time.
👑 Fillings vs. Crowns
Fillings: Used for small cavities when most of the natural tooth structure is still healthy and strong.
Crowns: Protective caps that cover the entire tooth. They are used when a cavity is too large for a filling to hold. Because baby teeth are small and thin, they often need crowns to prevent them from breaking apart during chewing.
Silver vs. White Crowns: Both fully protect the tooth. Silver crowns are very visible and cost less. White crowns match the natural tooth color but cost more.
Does dental work last forever? No. Just like shoes, dental fillings and crowns wear down from daily biting and chewing. Maintenance will be required over the lifetime of the tooth.
💤 Sedation & Safety Guidelines
Why is sedation recommended? It keeps young, anxious, or highly active children calm and comfortable. This allows the doctors to perform treatments safely and precisely while ensuring your child has a positive, fear-free experience.
Strict Rule: No food or drink before the procedure. Sedation relaxes your child's natural reflexes. If there is food or liquid in their stomach, they could vomit and inhale it into their lungs, causing a dangerous breathing emergency. If your child eats or drinks anything, the appointment must be rescheduled.
Why must parents wait in the waiting room? To guarantee your child’s safety. Our dental team needs absolute focus and a quiet, calm environment to monitor your child. Our trained pediatric team will stay with your child the entire time and bring you back the moment the procedure is complete.
